October 13, 2014 - "For Yourself"

Today’s question: After the death of Solomon, Israel divided into two nations or kingdoms. The northern kingdom was referred to as Israel while the southern kingdom was known as Judah. Can you name the four prophets God sent to Israel (northern kingdom)? As I mentioned in the last edition of “Biblelink,” the answer is found in Part 3 of the Bible Overview Mini-Course. That answer is Elijah, Elisha, Amos and Hosea.

We know most of the Bible’s 20+ prophets through their own writings in books named after them. This is true for Amos and Hosea. Elijah and Elisha are an exception in that they were not “writing” prophets. We learn about their ministry in the Bible’s books of I & II Kings.

I don’t know about you, but it helps me a lot to be able to tie Bible characters, such as prophets or kings, to a particular “place” and “time!” For this reason, all the Bible’s prophets are presented in the Bible Overview Mini-Course according to the people and place to which God sent them:

  • Israel (northern kingdom)
  • Judah (southern kingdom)
  • Jews in Babylonian exile
  • Jews returned to Jerusalem after the exile
  • Judah’s neighbors (Nineveh & Edom)

As we have asserted all along, the primary purpose for the online Bible Overview Mini-Course is to provide people with a “first step” to understanding and falling in love with God’s Word! Hopefully, all the people who choose to complete this short course will be encouraged to continue their own study of the Bible.

With that in mind, I have just discovered an online resource for Bible study that is very exciting! It is called “LOOK at the BOOK.” It is presented by John Piper on his website, desiringGod.org. Please note the introduction to the Bible study:   “There’s no book like the Bible. Learn to read it for yourself. Look at the Book is a new online method of teaching the Bible. It’s an ongoing series of 8–12 minute videos in which the camera is on the text, not the teacher. You will hear John Piper’s voice and watch his pen underline, circle, make connections, and scribble notes — all to help you learn to read God’s word for yourself. His goal is to help you not only see what he sees, but where he sees it and how he found it.” (emphasis added)

I have looked at several of these videos and find them incredibly effective! This would be a powerful tool to bookmark on your Smartphone or iPad. When you’re stuck in a waiting room somewhere (hopefully with free Wi-Fi) just insert your earplug and learn more about God’s Word. The videos are just 8-12 minutes and sure beat thumbing through a magazine in which you’re not really interested!

Here’s your next question: Can you name the six prophets God sent to Judah (southern kingdom)? As usual, the answer is found in Part 3 of the Bible Overview Mini-Course. Here’s a link for those of you who may not have a Bible at your finger tips: BibleGateway.com. Praying that you will allow the transforming power of His Word into your heart!!!!!
